Born in Paris in 1768, Debret studied under the famous Jacques-Louis David.

In 1816, Debret was invited to Rio de Janeiro by the King of Portugal to teach art and create works for the court.

Debret's time in Brazil was marked by extensive travel and the creation of numerous drawings and watercolors depicting Brazilian life and culture.

One of Debret's most famous works is the painting 'Arrival of Dona Leopoldina', which shows her arrival in Brazil with an architectural arcade and a crowd of military men and aristocrats.
