Meet Theodore Gericault, the French artist who paved the way for Romanticism.
Born in Rouen, France, in 1791, Gericault's life was marked by tragedy and loss.
After his mother's death, Gericault's father paid a man to take his place in the army, giving him time to develop his artistic talents.
Gericault's early work, Hunter Loading, earned him recognition and a prize at the Paris Salon in 1812.
In 1817, Gericault returned to Paris, where he was swept up in the Romantic movement, creating works that depicted the hours of the day and night.
