Bedroom in Arles - Vincent Van Gogh

With bold brushstrokes and vibrant colors, Van Gogh captured the essence and atmosphere of the place, transforming a mundane space into a charged scene of emotion and meaning.

"Bedroom in Arles" is a testament to Van Gogh's intense emotional depth and unique vision, which sought to convey not only the physical appearance of things but also their spiritual essence.

As we contemplate this painting, we are invited to enter the inner world of the artist and reflect on the beauty and simplicity of everyday life.

The Bedroom in Arles

The Bedroom in Arles is one of Vincent van Gogh's most famous paintings and one of the most discussed works of all time.

The artist painted three versions of the composition at the request of his brother Theo, created between 1888 and 1889.

The composition depicts the artist's bedroom in the famous house he rented in Arles, southern France, where he worked for almost his entire life.

Despite depicting a place of rest, there is something unsettling about the elements: the floor appears to slope forward, the pictures are too far from the wall, the furniture is out of place, and most of the objects are in duplicate...

But it's not the form that impresses, but the content, in this case, the color.

The colors are your character. He described it as a work that should suggest calm:

"It's simply my bedroom. It's the color that does everything, giving, through simplicity, greater style to things and suggesting the idea of calm or, naturally, sleep.

The presence of the painting, in short, should calm the head, or better, the fantasy".

Van Gogh painted this painting in anticipation of his friend Paul Gauguin's visit.

His idea was to found a colony of artists, he invited several painters, Gauguin was the only one to accept.

There are some evidence in the painting that suggest this, everything is represented in duplicate, such as two chairs, two jugs of water, two pictures, and a bed with two pillows.

Observing the painting, we have the sensation that it is floating.

The walls are in light blue and the doors in dark blue, the furniture, or rather, the chairs, the table, and the bed, and even the picture frames are in yellow, the window is green and the glass has a lighter green tone, almost yellow.

The entire painting is in harmony with the colors, only the bedspread presents a greater contrast as it is red, contrasting with the dominant color of the walls and doors.

Although he sought to convey a sense of tranquility in his painting, this work reflects the intense tension and solitude of the artist.

The objects in the room, disarranged, have no relationship with each other, just like the furniture, out of alignment with the perspective, where the floor appears to slope forward, the window is ajar, the pictures hang towards the bed, the furniture is diagonal, everything seems to reflect the chaos in which the painter was immersed.

Van Gogh did not worry about representing a physical space in a realistic way, but rather the representation of the inner and subjective space of the emotionally lived experience.

The Color as Character
