The Cathedral - Auguste Rodin

The Cathedral or The Cathedral Hands is a sculpture by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin created in 1908.

At the beginning of the 20th century, around 1907, the artist sculpted a small piece – just sixty-five centimeters high and thirty centimeters wide – that diverged from the grand productions he usually created. It features two hands, both right hands, rising and attempting to fuse into one.

Observing the sculpture, we notice a void created between the hands. In fact, the artist began to incorporate the hollow space as another element of the work itself. Indeed, if the piece is named The Cathedral, it is because the empty space generated between the two hands resembles the internal structure of a Gothic cathedral, where the right and left sections converge at the keystone of the vault.
