Kazimir Malevich was a prominent Russian artist, founder of the artistic and philosophical school known as Suprematism. His ideas about forms and meanings in art would eventually constitute the theoretical foundations of abstract art. Malevich worked in a variety of styles, but his most important and famous works focused on the exploration of pure geometric forms (squares, triangles, and circles) and their relationships with each other and within the pictorial space. Due to his contacts in the West, he was able to transmit his ideas about painting to his fellow artists in Europe and the United States, profoundly influencing the evolution of modern art.

In 1904, Malevich moved to Moscow to attend the Stroganov Art School. He also had private lessons from Ivan Rerberg, a renowned art teacher. During this period, Malevich continued his training at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, where artists like Leonid Pasternak and Konstantin Korovin taught him techniques of impressionist and post-impressionist painting. His early works were largely executed under the influence of Symbolism and Art Nouveau.

From 1907 onwards, a shift towards a decidedly more avant-garde aesthetic occurred in his work, when Kazimir met artists like Wassily Kandinsky, David Burliuk and Mikhail Larionov who, in 1910, invited him to participate in their collective exhibition group called Golden Fleece. He also participated in some art groups that focused on the philosophies of primitivist art, cubist and futurist. After breaking with Larionov, Malevich took a leading role in the association of futurist artists known as Union of Youth (Soyuz Molodezhi) based in Saint Petersburg.

BIOGRAPHY

Self-portrait c.1910

Kazimir Severinovich Malevich was born on February 23, 1879, near Kiev, in Ukraine. His father secured a job at a sugar factory and in construction, where his son also worked during his early adolescence. Without any special encouragement from his family, Kazimir began drawing around the age of twelve.

In 1895, he started attending the Kiev Art School. He was firmly set on his artistic career, so he went on to attend various art schools.

In 1912-1913, Malevich began combining the essential elements of Analytical Cubism and Italian Futurism, resulting in a dynamic geometric deconstruction of figures in space.

In 1915, he laid the groundwork for Suprematism by publishing his manifesto, From Cubism to Suprematism, abandoning all figurative elements in his painting and turning towards pure abstraction.

To understand the rest of this journey, continue to our next article: Biography of Kazimir Malevich and Suprematism: The Consolidation of Abstract Vision (Part 2).

But history holds a peculiar detail: Malevich was one of the first artists to create works of art that had no apparent meaning, yet were still capable of evoking emotions and responses in those who saw them.

This revolutionary approach to abstract art not only changed how people thought about art but also opened the way for a new generation of artists seeking to explore new frontiers of creativity.

Today, Malevich's work is considered one of the most important in the history of modern art, and his influence can be seen in everything from conceptual art to electronic music.
