His musical career took off in the 1960s. His compositions, renowned for their poetic depth and social commitment, swiftly rose to fame.

Among his most famous works are "A Banda," "Construção," and "Apesar de Você."

Beyond music, Chico Buarque is also a novelist, penning critically lauded works like "Budapeste" and "Leite Derramado."

His diverse body of work and his fierce stand against censorship during Brazil's military dictatorship solidify Chico Buarque's place as a cornerstone of Brazilian culture.

Born in Rio de Janeiro – a true cariocaChico Buarque entered the world as Francisco Buarque de Hollanda on June 19, 1944.

He is the son of the renowned historian Sérgio Buarque de Holanda.

His mother, Maria Amélia Cesário Alvim, was a painter and pianist.

This famed composer and performer is undoubtedly one of Brazilian Popular Music's (MPB) most significant figures. Indeed, countless of his songs have been recorded by a constellation of Brazil's greatest vocalists: Elis Regina, Simone, Gal Costa, Maria Bethânia, Ney Matogrosso, Milton Nascimento, to name just a few.

His discography boasts nearly eighty albums, often featuring collaborations with fellow musicians. Think: Tom Jobim, Francis Hime, Vinícius de Moraes, and Caetano Veloso.

More than just a musician, Chico Buarque is also an accomplished playwright and writer. He has authored numerous books, and remarkably, penned his very first short story at the tender age of 18.

In 1963, he enrolled in the Faculty of Architecture at USP (University of São Paulo), known as FAU. Yet, he never fully completed the program, opting instead, from 1965 onward, to pursue his artistic calling.

As a musician, he was a fixture at numerous festivals throughout the '60s. These events, then vital cultural platforms, drew thousands.

At Brazil's celebrated Song Festivals, Chico Buarque triumphed with his song 'A Banda' in 1966.

During the 1967 Festival, his composition Roda Viva, performed by the group MPB4, made a profound impression.

As the military regime tightened its grip on Brazil in 1969, Chico, a staunch socialist, chose self-exile in Italy.

He returned to Brazil the very next year. Immediately, he emerged as one of the nation's most outspoken artists, a leading voice in political critique and the relentless push for democratization.

Chico Buarque was married to actress Marieta Severo, with whom he had three daughters.

The marriage lasted 33 years.

He shall not pass...
