A Portrait of the Human Journey

'Eternal Wanderers' captures the essence of the human journey in search of peace and belonging, using somber colors and expressive forms to convey the emotion and pain of these experiences.

Those who gaze upon this painting cannot help but reflect on the human condition and the universality of the struggle for survival and dignity.

Eternal Wanderers,a painting belonging to the expressionism of Lasar Segall, with its distorted figures, is part of one of the works acquired during the First World War in 1920, to become part of the collection of the Museum of the City of Dresden, then directed by the art historian Paul Ferdinand Schmidt.

With Hitler in command of the National Socialist Government, when he rose to power in Germany, this work was removed from that collection in 1933.

A Controversial Exhibition

Eternal Wanderers and four other paintings were part of an exhibition displayed in Munich in 1937, in the famous show titled Degenerate Art, which aimed to discredit modern art.

During the Second World War, this canvas, one of the best examples of Segall's constructive expressionism, remained with thousands of other works by German expressionists, confined to official storage facilities.

A Triumphant Return

When the war ended, this painting was located, in a private collection in Europe, by the dealer Emeric Hahn. At the request of the artist's widow, Jenny Klabin Segall, knowing of its existence, the painting was recovered, returned to Brazil, and became part of the collection of the Museum Lasar Segall definitively.

We recommend the film "The Hunters of Masterpieces"
- Based on real facts of the biggest treasure hunt in history, the feature film The Hunters of Masterpieces tells the story of a distinguished battalion in the midst of World War II with the mission of going to Germany and rescuing from the Nazis the thieves who had stolen and returning them to their place of origin. Eternal Wanderers was among them.
