Fernando Botero Angulo was a Colombian figurative artist, whose personal style became known as 'Boterismo,' easily identifiable by the characteristics of volume expansion or deformation, thus gaining the admiration of critics and the public.
BIOGRAPHY
Fernando Botero was born on April 19, 1932, in the city of Medellin, was the second of three children of vendor Davi Botero and seamstress Flora Angulo.
At four years old, Fernando lost his father, victim of a heart attack, and was left in the care of his mother and an uncle who played a fundamental role in his life, having placed him in a bullfighter school for two years, although he preferred art on paper.
As he grew up, the boy felt increasingly fascinated by the Baroque style, which he saw in colonial churches and Medellín's life.
He began working as an illustrator in 1948.
Already at 16, the young man saw his first illustrations published in the Sunday supplement of the newspaper “El Colombiano,” one of the most prominent in Medellín.
With the money received, Botero paid for his high school education.
At that time, he exhibited his work, for the first time, alongside other artists from his region.
Between 1949 and 1950, he worked as a set designer.
He moved to Bogotá in 1951 and it was there that he held his first international exhibition at Leo Matiz Gal.
They were drawings, oil paintings, and watercolors by a young unknown painter who had just arrived from the province.
It is a fact that his works did not achieve great success, but Fernando continued firm in his desire to pursue an artistic career.
Before completing a year, in relation to the previous event, Leo Matiz held another exhibition with the artist's works, achieving great success, with all the works on display being sold.
Fernando Botero was 19 years old.
In 1952, he traveled to Madrid and studied at the Academia de San Fernando.
Between 1953 and 1955, he lived in Florence, Italy, where he studied the History of Art and learned the technique of fresco.
He returned to Colombia in 1955 and exhibited at the Biblioteca Nacional in Bogotá.
In 1956, he spent some time in Mexico, studying the political murals of Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco, whose influence is evident in his work, where he makes a social and political critique.
In 1961, he settled in New York, where in 1965 he opened his studio.
From the 1970s onwards, the artist began to divide his time between Paris, Madrid, and Medellín.
Botero is also known for the large number of donations he makes to his hometown, Medellín.
As a citizen and Colombian artist, he became a true symbol of his country.
In April 2012, the master celebrated his 80th birthday with various tributes and permanent exhibitions in several countries.
Fernando Botero inspires the pride of the Hispanic world, not only by the cultural diffusion achieved by his work, but also by the invention of a personal language, determined by his passion for life and art.
He died on September 15, 2023, at the age of 91.
The painter and sculptor lived in Monaco, spent days hospitalized due to pneumonia, but asked to be transferred to his residence, where he died.
