When Manet revealed the painting at the prestigious Paris Salon, both the theme and style caused a unprecedented scandal.

Ironically, it was this scandal that played a crucial role in the painting's final fame and helped put Manet's name on the map.

In 1863, Manet completed two significant works: O Almoço na Relva and Olympia. Featuring everyday life female figures reproduced in a realistic and large scale, these works were unprecedented.

Only Olympia was accepted.

The painting features two figures: a reclining nude female figure accompanied by a maid standing beside her.

Both the nudity and the reclining figure's position refer to earlier works, including Venus of Urbino, a Renaissance painting by Titian and A Maja Desnuda by Francisco de Goya, both sources of inspiration for Olympia.

Her confrontational gaze was an affront to the superficial modesty with which women should behave.

To better understand the painting, we must consider:

  • Firstly, Olympia, the nude figure, intended to be a prostitute – an element emphasized by the symbolic presence of a black cat and a bouquet of flowers.
  • Secondly, surprisingly, are her accessories; the black ribbon around her neck, the orchid in her hair, and the flat shoe accentuate her nudity and, at the same time, illustrate Olympia's comfort with her lifestyle.
  • Thirdly, the secure and direct gaze of the figure was seen as controversial. Manet's inclusion of a female nude with a calculating gaze was strategic, as it connects the viewer to the canvas and allows them to engage with Olympia.

It is popularly believed that Olympia is a pictorial representation of passages from the famous collection of poems by Charles Baudelaire called Les Fleurs du Mal, from 1857.

For example, Manet openly includes a black cat, symbolizing intensified sexuality and prostitution - a characteristic symbol of Baudelaire.
