"Coffee is the breadwinner for approximately 25 million people in 42 countries. And it was for these people, owners of small properties and workers on large plantations, that I dedicated my attention to photographing them in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. For these workers, coffee and life are inseparable things. And it has been this way for centuries, through generations. Coffee defines the seasons of the year, the rhythm of work, their income, their well-being" - Sebastião Salgado

"The portraits of Sebastião Salgado show us a multiple aspect of human suffering. They are brutally frank images of hunger and pain, and yet, they have respect and modesty. Nothing to do with the tourism of misery…"
