Candido Portinari was born in the town of Brodowski, in the interior of São Paulo, on December 29, 1903. His parents were Italian immigrants who came to Brazil to work on a coffee plantation, hoping to improve their lives.

At the age of nine, Candinho, as he was known, already showed an interest in art, assisting with the painting of churches in the city and surrounding area.
