Biography

Francisco Rebolo Gonsales was born in São Paulo on August 22, 1902.

His parents immigrated to Brazil at the end of the 19th century, coming from Spain and settling in the Mooca neighborhood, a traditional area that received many immigrants.

The artist was the fifth child of the Spanish immigrant couple from Andalusia.

In 1915, he was hired as an apprentice decorator, where he first encountered paints and brushes.

During this period, he created decorations for various houses and details of the Igrejas of Santa Ifigênia and Santa Cecília, in São Paulo.

These experiences were very favorable for his future development as an artist.

In 1934, his career as a decorator took off, leading him to transfer his atelier to a room in the Edifício Santa Helena, located on Praça da Sé, a very important fact that marked the beginning of his career as a painter.

It was then that he began to structure the Grupo Santa Helena, famous for bringing together artists of different styles, but who shared the same passion for art.

Along with Rebolo, members of this group included: Mário Zanini, Fulvio Pennacchi, Aldo Bonadei, Nelson Nóbrega, Humberto Rosa, Manuel Martins, Clóvis Graciano, Alfredo Volpi and Alfredo Rizzotti.

FOOTBALL, A CAREER APART...

In 1917, he began playing as a semi-professional footballer for the Associação Atlética São Bento.

In 1922, he fulfilled his dream by joining the Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, his beloved team.

After playing for the "Timão", Rebolo played for another six years at the Clube Atlético Ypiranga, even facing his beloved team in a match in 1928.

His connection with the Corinthians remained strong even after he left football; he was the creator of the current emblem of the club, designed in the early 1930s.

In 1934, he ended his athletic career, deciding to dedicate himself exclusively to his career as a painter.

CURIOSITY: In 2017, a survey was conducted to elect the most beautiful emblem of all the teams. Among the 53 selected logos, the Corinthians' emblem was chosen as the best.

Francisco Rebolo passed away on July 10, 1980, in São Paulo, due to a heart attack.

His work is estimated to be over three thousand paintings, hundreds of drawings, and a set of fifty engravings of different techniques.

Today, his work is managed by the Instituto Rebolo - @reboloinstituto, spread across the main Brazilian museums and private collectors (http://institutorebolo.org.br/).
