BIOGRAPHY
Henri Julien Félix Rousseau was born on May 21, 1844, in the city of Laval, in northwest France.
He grew up in humble circumstances. His father, a blacksmith, had long-term financial difficulties, accumulating debts sufficient to result in the seizure of the family home in 1851. As a student, Henri was an internal student at the Laval College, which he attended until 1860.
He was a mediocre student, receiving distinct instructions in music and drawing.
His vivid colors, ambiguous spaces, non-realistic scale, and dramatic intensity present dreamy, almost surreal compositions.
At times, he incorporated details inspired by paintings he had seen in museums or images he had seen in books and magazines, transforming them into elements of his own visions.
LEGACY
With an absurdly attractive strangeness that could evoke mystery, his work left an indelible mark on artists of the next generation and beyond.
Using a self-taught technique and a childlike sense of simplicity, he was classified as belonging to primitivism.
