Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres was a highly influential neoclassical French painter.
He is known for his precise, meticulous, and detailed style, which reflected his admiration for classical antiquity and the Italian Renaissance.

Ingres was born on August 29, 1780, in Montauban, France.
He was the eldest son of the sculptor, painter, and musician Jean-Marie Joseph Ingres.

From a very young age, he demonstrated talent for art, music, and the visual arts.
By 1789, he was already signing his first drawing.
In 1791, his father sent him to the nearby city of Toulouse, enrolling him in the Académie Royale de Peinture, Sculpture et Architecture, where he studied with the painters Guillaume-Joseph Roques, Jean Briant, and the sculptor Jean-Pierre Vigan.
Between 1794 and 1796, he showed an interest in music, being a member of the Orchestre du Capitole of Toulouse as the second violinist.
His musical skills gave rise to the phrase "Violin of Ingres", used to describe a prodigious talent, but secondary, overshadowed by the main occupation.

In 1797, following the typical progression of young ambitious artists, Ingres left Toulouse for Paris, where he had a guaranteed place to attend the atelier of the illustrious neoclassical master Jacques-Louis David.
Napoleon Bonaparte and Louis Philippe I of France.
The recent French military victories in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy brought to Paris trophies of historical art collections, providing the artist with unprecedented access to Renaissance masterpieces.

Despite coinciding with the emergence of Romanticism in art, Ingres remained faithful to Neoclassicism and was frequently criticized for his cold and academic style.
