Portuguese Harbors in Saint-Tropez is a painting by the French artist Paul Signac, one of the main representatives of Naturalism. The work that presents the spectacular view of the port of Saint-Tropez, was created at the height of Signac's time as a leader of this movement.
In April 1892, Signac set sail on his boat Olympia de Concarneau to the south of France, in search of restorative sunlight and to recover from the death of his friend Georges Seurat who had passed away the previous year.

When he arrived at the port of Saint-Tropez, which at the time could only be accessed by boat, the visual splendor of the houses with terracotta roofs left a lasting impression on the artist.
This fascinating location continued to be a source of attraction for Signac in the subsequent decades, during which he produced various versions of the port scene.
The present composition has the distinction of being one of the first representations of Saint Tropez by Signac, and captures the charm and fascination of this seaside village.
The painting is characterized by a systematic application of color points, a technique used by his colleague Seurat, pointillism.
Leading this innovative technique at the end of the 1880s and the beginning of the 1890s, Signac was considered the main spokesperson for this innovative style of painting, a movement that officially began with the closing of the eighth and last collective exhibition of impressionism in Paris in 1886.
But history holds a strange detail: the present work, created when Signac's technique was at its peak, summarizes his bold stylistic innovation.
The artist's approach here was rooted in a careful study of geometry, with a particular focus on the rigid horizontality of the port architecture and its reflections in the water.
Very similar to the great landscape painting of the Renaissance, the bell tower of the church serves as the vanishing point of the painting in this refined linear perspective from a single point.
With this technique, Signac was able to create a work of art that is at the same time a representation of the village of Saint-Tropez and an expression of his own artistic vision.
The painting is a perfect example of Signac's ability to capture the essence of a place and transform it into a work of art that is at the same time beautiful and significant.
