It was during the period between 1508 and 1511 that Raphael Sanzio painted his most famous work, the fresco  The School of Athens ( Scuola di Atene ). It was the second mural painting to be completed in the Stanza della Segnatura, after La Disputa and is considered one of the greatest paintings of the Renaissance. The general theme of the image, in fact the whole room, is a synthesis of worldly (Greek) and spiritual (Christian) thought, and is alongside the best examples of Renaissance art.

Rival of his contemporary, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Raphael completed three other papal rooms in the Vatican, the first being the decoration of the Stanza della Segnatura, which was probably a space that housed a library of the rooms of Pope Julius II. Four themes were chosen, where Raphael applied one to each specific wall, as well as the painting of the ceiling of this space, using the same themes: Theology, Poetry, Justice, and Philosophy
