Toulouse-Lautrec, known for his representations of Parisian nightlife, captures the energy and immersive atmosphere of the Moulin Rouge with bold brushstrokes and vibrant colors.

The painting is a masterful example of Toulouse-Lautrec's distinctive style and a memorable representation of Parisian Belle Époque.

The Dance at the Moulin Rouge is an important painting by the French Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec that the artist produced to mark the opening of the famous establishment in 1889, which was one of the happiest moments of his life.

The Moulin Rouge is a traditional nightlife venue that still operates as a cabaret today.

One of the most elegant and visited tourist spots in Paris, it has a red windmill existing on the roof that serves as a magnet for visitors passing through Montmartre.

The Dance at the Moulin Rouge: READING THE WORK

This large painting presents the Moulin Rouge, a popular dance hall where men in dark coats and top hats converse with each other, while the women show off their extravagant hats and feathered cloaks. In the center, people are dancing. The large open space between the figures and the wooden floor below, are tilted, inviting us to enter the painting and join the crowd.

In the foreground, we find a woman in pink who is shown in profile, eyes downcast, gazing at the dancers.

Imposing figure, her silhouette directs our gaze - almost like a signpost - towards the curved and rhythmic figures of the lone dancers to the left, whose shadows can be seen on the floor in the foreground where the shapes of their bodies echo.

The dancer was a popular figure at the time, known as Valentine, the desossado, artistic name of Joseph Pujol, specialist in animating audiences with the rare gift he possessed.

In this painting, Lautrec presents us with legs that appear like rubber, explains his nickname. He is shown here teaching a young woman how to learn a new daring dance.

In the background, we can see a waiter serving drinks to the elegant gentlemen and their hats. Behind him, we find four vertical columns, with various chandeliers illuminating the trees that can be seen through the transparent glass of the large windows of this refined place.

The color used by Toulouse-Lautrec is more vibrant, more joyful than in his previous works - a reflection of the strong passion the painter had for this place.

In this work, Lautrec shows himself more personal, abandoning the strong realistic tone of his early works.

The interest in drawing is evident in the preference for the line that composes the figures. The joy of the place is perfectly captured, demonstrating the perfect harmony of the artist with the location.

The owner of the establishment, liked this painting so much that he hung it in the bar, opening the way for an art gallery.

Later, the artist produced several advertising posters for the cabaret, which would go down in history for their dances, musical performances, and stunning dancers.

Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec Monfa was born on November 24, 1864, in Albi, an ancient city located in the southwest of France.

He died in France, in the city of Saint-André-du-Bois, on September 9, 1901.
