I invite you to appreciate The Milkmaid, one of the most delicate and enchanting paintings by the Dutch master Johannes Vermeer.

Created around 1658-1661, this Baroque masterpiece depicts a young woman pouring milk from a jug into a bowl, set against a soft, warm light that highlights the textures and colors of the scene.

Vermeer was known for his ability to capture everyday moments with great sensitivity and realism, and in The Milkmaid he creates a serene and beautiful atmosphere.

As you observe this work, you will be transported to the tranquil and poetic world of Vermeer's paintings, where every detail is a celebration of life and the simple beauty of everyday moments.

The Milkmaid is a painting belonging to the Baroque period, created by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer.

This is one of the few paintings by Johannes Vermeer where the woman is portrayed in a positive light, similar to 'The Milkmaid (1665-1668).

Normally, women who performed domestic services were depicted as lazy or drunk, showing the consequences of vice.

However, the protagonist of this painting embodies the simplicity of the virtuous woman, as indicated by the other elements that complete the scene, including:

  • The milk, a symbol of purity, and the pieces of bread cut on the table, representing Christ, are unmistakable signs of virtue.
  • The room is very simple, with only the essentials. It appears that this was intentional. Studies using X-rays have shown that the painter covered a map that decorated the wall behind the scene.
  • The harmony emanating from this painting is due to the warm, golden layer of color that covers the surface, imitating the light of dawn entering through the window.

One curiosity that we should highlight is the presence of the same blue used by Vermeer in the turban of The Milkmaid.

In this work, we find the valuable ultramarine natural, in the apron and the tablecloth on the table. This wonderful blue is rare to find in other paintings of the time, but common in Vermeer's works.
