However, he was also known for his unique style as a watercolorist.

No one captured the isolation of the individual within the modern city like he did.

His images of figures in urban environments go far beyond their role as modern landscapes, exposing the weak point of human experience.

Biography

Edward Hopper was born on July 22, 1882, in New York City.

The artist spent most of his childhood in Upper Nyack, where he was born.

His family was largely middle-class.

His parents were of Dutch nationality and were dry goods merchants.

They raised Edward in a strict Baptist tradition.

Although they were not rich, they were able to support their children.

A clear proof of this was the public and private education of Hopper and his only sister, Marion.

Hopper excelled in his studies and demonstrated from a very young age the spark of a creative mind.

His father was a meticulous intellectual with immense proficiency in the French language.

These characteristics, along with an artistic heritage, is what Hopper absorbed from his father, who also provided him with all the encouragement and materials he needed to facilitate his artistic journey.

He was over six feet tall in early adolescence.

He had few friends and spent most of his time alone with his books and art.

Consequently, during his adolescence, Hopper was working on mastering a variety of forms of art, including watercolor and oil.

The young Edward spent his days by the river, with a sketchbook in hand, observing and drawing the construction of boats and sailors.

This initial period is documented in several drawings of boats and ships, as well as in several handmade wooden boat models.

In his college years, he briefly wanted to become an architect.

It wasn't until after he graduated that he was certain to adopt art as a lifelong occupation.

So, he began formally studying art in 1899.

He studied for six years at the New York School of Art and Design, delving deeper into the skills of oil painting.

Born into a family with conservative values, he initially found the task of drawing from live models challenging.

In 1905, he began working at an advertising agency, where he drew covers for specialized magazines, but was dissatisfied with the rules and regulations he had to follow.

Hopper traveled to Europe three times between 1906 and 1910, enjoying two extended stays in Paris.

The influence of the Impressionists led him to the streets to draw and paint en plein air.

Years later, he would describe his work from this period as a modified form of Impressionism.

He was particularly drawn to the unconventional compositional arrangements of Édouard Manet and Edgar Degas in their representations of modern urban life.

During a visit to Amsterdam, Hopper also admired the work of Rembrandt, which he described as the most wonderful thing he had ever seen.

He spent a few more years painting urban scenes, including drawings of cafes and streets.

He soon discovered that realism was the domain he was drawn to.

However, for months, he struggled to find inspiration for his work, to discover this, he traveled to Massachusetts.
