I invite you to immerse yourself in Almeida Júnior's Longing, one of the most moving depictions of melancholy and nostalgia.

Painted in 1899, this work reveals the artist's profound sensitivity in representing a solitary woman, lost in thought, while holding a letter.

The expression of sadness and longing on her face conveys a universal emotion that resonates across time.

Almeida Júnior, renowned for his skills in portraying rural Brazilian life, demonstrates here his mastery in capturing the complexity of human emotions.

As we contemplate 'Longing', we are invited to reflect on the ephemeral nature of life and the universality of human experience.

This is one of the most famous paintings by the Brazilian Almeida Júnior, an important artist of the 19th century who was one of the representatives of the Realist movement.

In this composition, a woman is the central figure and also the presence of a window, an element so common in the painter's works, which had a predilection for depicting everyday environments, making him a master of narrative painting.

There is a light in a perpendicular direction that enters through the first quadrant, passes through the hat, earrings, mouth, tear, document, book, and ends at the open trunk that guides our gaze in the work.

The woman's posture turned inward indicates introspection, ignoring the external universe.

With black clothing, her back to the wooden window, and facing the observer, with her head bowed and hair falling on her left face, with tears streaming down her nose, she holds a photo in her left hand, while covering her mouth with a black shawl in her right hand.

Her face, with her eyes compressed, conveys a great sense of longing.

Moreover, note the photograph she holds in her left hand and her right arm, whose hand covers her face using the shawl, with the intention of stifling any sob.

It is essential to highlight the way the artist composes his work in a rich structure that is directly linked to the center of attention of the narrative.

The straw hat hung on the wall leads to a second character, absent from the scene, probably the husband.

An open trunk, where you can see, above its lid, an old photo album, covered with a veil, reinforces the feeling of loneliness and sadness.

Through the open window, light enters, only a part of it is visible.

The entire environment is simple, with the left wall needing repairs, leading the observer to imagine that it is a rural environment.

The colors of the house, of the location harmonize with the tones of the woman's skin, showing that she belongs to this location.
