He was a natural draftsman who experimented and eventually mastered color theory and wrote extensively about it.

His writings are considered as important to modern art as a treatise on the painting of Leonardo da Vinci is to the Renaissance.

He and Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky taught at the famous art, design, and architecture school, the German Bauhaus.

His works reflect his memories, from a child's perspective, his moods, and personal beliefs, as well as his musical influence.

Paul Klee: Biography

Paul Klee was born in Münchenbuchsee, a city in Switzerland, on December 18, 1879.

At seven, Paul learned violin lessons at the Municipal Music School.

Even in adolescence, he decided to pursue a career in the visual arts, despite his parents insisting on a musical career.

With his parents' reluctant permission, in 1898, he began studying art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, with Heinrich Knirr and Franz von Stuck.

After receiving his diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts, Klee went to Italy with his friend Hermann Haller where he stayed from October 1901 to May 1902.

During his studies in Munich, Paul Klee met the Bavarian pianist Lily Stumpf.

In 1910, he held his first solo exhibition in Bern, then traveled to three Swiss cities.

The artist remained isolated from the developments of modern art until 1911, when he met in Munich Alfred Kubin and through him, Francis Marc, Wassily Kandinsky, and August Macke of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider).

From then on, they were friends for life.
