The Influences of Paul Klee
Senecio is one of the most representative paintings of the artist Paul Klee, belonging to cubism and in it it is possible to appreciate the echoes of African masks.
The African masks were some of the objects that most caught the attention of avant-garde artists in the 19th and 20th centuries, perhaps the most clear example of the influence that these objects had on the painters of the time, is the famous painting The Ladies of Avignon that the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso made in 1907.
The Work of Paul Klee
The work belongs to a series of paintings that the artist made during the 1920s with the theme of circus, in this way, the colorful patches refer to the clothes of the harlequins and are in tune with other works by the artist such as “The Clown”.
This adaptation of the human face is divided by color into rectangles. Quadratic geometric planes are kept inside a circle representing a masked face and displaying the multi-colored costume of a harlequin. It is a portrait of the circus artist Senecio, which can be seen as a symbol of the mutable relationship between art, illusion, and the world of drama.
The Essence of Paul Klee
In this work, Paul uses several shades of orange, red, and yellow and simple forms to reveal the portrait of an old man. The artistic use of forms gives the false impression that an eye is raised. His left eyebrow is represented by a triangle, while the other is made of a simple curved line. The portrait also imitates infantile artistic work using ambiguous forms with minimal facial details.
This painting demonstrates the principles of art of Paul Klee, in which the graphic elements of the line, color planes, and space are placed in motion by the energy of the artist's mind. In his creative scribbles, he liked, in his own words, to "follow a line for a walk".
