His technique combines hand-drawn sketches with photography, resulting in surreal and impressive optical illusions.
Since sharing his work online in 2010, Ben Heine has gained international recognition, exhibiting in galleries worldwide and collaborating with famous brands.
In addition to 'Pencil vs Camera,' his other works include oil paintings, sculptures, and music.
Heine continues to explore new forms of art, drawing inspiration from everyday life, nature, and social issues to create thought-provoking works that challenge perception and invite reflection.
BEN HEINE: NOTABLE SERIES:
In this series, the artist combined two artistic modalities: illustration and photography.
The creation of these works began in 2010 and gained popularity worldwide from then on.
The images typically show a hand-drawn sketch maintained and photographed by the artist to infuse common scenes with new, surreal, visionary, or romantic narratives.
The visible hand of Ben represents the connection between the viewer, the artist, and the artwork.
Heine does not recreate photographs but reimagines them.
In these images, he likes to tell a story and convey timeless messages using imagination, illusion, poetry, and surrealism.
His work is driven by a fearless positivity.
A beautiful photo is enhanced with a sketch that adds a touch of satire and whimsy.
Flesh and Acrylic
Another project initiated in 2011, Ben Heine creates large-scale abstract acrylic paintings on wooden panels.
The artist combines a model with the background.
The peculiarity of the project lies in the fact that a living person is integrated into the artwork and becomes part of the composition, making them almost invisible.
The final result is often wild, colorful, and attractive.
He usually creates such artworks for public performances in museums or shopping centers around the world.
In 2013, Ben created the 'Black Stickers' series, a variation of 'Flesh and Acrylic,' where the painted models also danced and moved during Heine's performances.
Later, Heine began using mannequins in addition to living people, allowing him to spend more time on each creation.
Digital Cycling: Portraits of Celebrities Made with Circles
Using graphic software and creativity, Ben re-created this series initiated in 2010, iconic faces from history and pop culture with flat, colored circles of various sizes, giving them a three-dimensional and dynamic appearance.
Heine defines it as a synthesis of Pop Art (art that includes images of popular culture) and Pointillism (a painting technique that uses small, distinct points of pure color).
In this series, the artist adds a symbolic meaning to the subjects portrayed.
These portraits are as impressive as the iconic photo of Alberto Korda of Che Guevara, but suddenly reconstructed to be projected onto the infinite digital space, a kind of modern stained-glass artwork.
Each portrait requires between 100 to 180 hours.
In 2015, Heine collaborated with Mazda to create a circle design showing a giant lion face on the hood of a Mazda 3, which was exhibited at the Affordable Art Fair in Brussels.
Many of Ben's circle portraits, unfortunately, have been copied, stolen, and plagiarized in various countries around the globe.
